The ALSD Selects Spotlight 2020 Judges

This year’s panel of experts brings experience in multiple venue disciplines, including sales, operations, food and beverage, design, and construction. It’s our broadest and deepest bench of industry specialists to date.

The ALSD knows creating great experiences is a science and an art form. So when it comes to selecting judges for Spotlight 2020, we strive to select professionals who have the background and intuition needed to appreciate the nuances in every entry. We look for folks who have not only worked in the industry but have directed and participated in its inner workings in order to cultivate a firsthand appreciation for all our submissions entail.

That’s why we’re elated to announce this year’s judges for Spotlight 2020: Tom Wilson, President and CEO of Olympia Entertainment, Roy Westwood, Founder and Strategic Creative Director at Forward Associates, and Terry McIntyre, Head of Sales at Shawmut Design and Construction.

As President and CEO of Olympia Entertainment, Tom Wilson manages business operations for the Detroit Red Wings and collaborates with the Detroit Tigers baseball franchise as well as other Ilitch companies. Olympia also owns and operates Detroit’s Fox Theatre, City Theatre, and also books and operates Joe Louis Arena and books Comerica Park. His storied career began at The Forum in Los Angeles before moving back home to Detroit and embarking on an illustrious 32-year career with the Detroit Pistons, including the last 22 years as President and CEO of Palace Sports & Entertainment. ALSD Founder and Chairman Bill Dorsey considers Tom “the father of the premium seat market”, largely due to his role in the construction of The Palace of Auburn Hills, an arena that changed sports venue design forever and spurred the building boom of the past 30 years.

Roy Westwood’s Forward Associates is a UK-based consulting agency with a focus on improving guest experiences. Roy cut his teeth in restaurant management, helping to troubleshoot and transform struggling properties. His success led him to Levy Restaurants UK, where he sat on the board of directors for over five years in his role of Director of Strategy & Innovation. His acumen in strategy and creative direction, illustrated by work at prestigious venues such as the new home for Tottenham Hotspur, The O2, and The Wimbledon Championships, paired with his international point of view, make him a perfect addition to Spotlight.

Terry McIntyre has spent his time with Shawmut Design and Construction spearheading premium spaces at a slew of major sporting venues, including STAPLES Center, Madison Square Garden, Petco Park, and most recently, SoFi Stadium. Terry’s work in sports and entertainment has also stretched into the collegiate and esports markets, as he continues to add new arrows to Shawmut’s quiver, giving him a broad perspective on overall venue design and premium spaces. We’re excited to see his experience brought to bear for Spotlight.

ALSD Spotlight 2020 entries are due by September 1st. This year’s contest features 11 categories spanning multiple facets of the sports and entertainment industry. We love illustrating how professionals like you are innovating and pushing the experience envelope, and we’re certain our prestigious panel of judges is excited to review your best work.
