The initial phase of a two-year, $192.5 million renovation of Philips Arena is underway. Noticeable changes this season include the addition of a courtside bar (Hawks Bar) and adjacent club (Courtside Club), located behind one basket, with direct views of the court.
The notorious stacked suites on the arena’s west side are in the midst of reconfiguration, the top two rows of suites having been demolished prior to this season, to be transformed in time for the 2018-2019 NBA season.
The reduction of suites makes room for more social experiences, including Atlanta rapper Killer Mike’s Swag Shop barber franchise, TopGolf Swing Suites, and gourmet southern-style restaurant Zac Brown’s Social Club.
Also by next season, all remaining suites will be overhauled, the center-hung video board will triple in size, and the concourses will be reengineered to 360-degree formats.
Public funds, from Atlanta’s rental car tax, will pay for $142.5 million of the project’s cost. The Hawks are responsible for the balance.
ALSD 2018 will experience the Philips Arena renovation next June 24-27, 2018.
