The Madison Square Garden Company, owner of The Forum in Inglewood, California, has filed a claim against the city, stating city officials used a bait-and-switch strategy against them.
The claim declares Inglewood Mayor James Butts convinced MSG to give up its leasehold on part of its property in order to build a new business-technology park. But instead of building a business park, the city has entered into a deal with the Los Angeles Clippers to build a new NBA and concert arena on the site, which is across the street from the NFL stadium currently under construction.
The burden of proof is on MSG, as there is no known record of Butts making any promises to build the business-technology park. But the city is contractually obligated not to use the land for anything that would compete with The Forum’s business.
