The playing surface at Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium, under construction in London, is being heralded as a first of its kind. Designed as a multi-purpose facility, the new 61,500-seat venue will be able to host EPL matches as well as NFL games and concerts, perhaps on the same day.
To achieve quick turnaround times, a retractable grass pitch for EPL matches is being installed above a synthetic surface to be used for NFL games and other events.
Tottenham has inked a ten-year deal with the NFL to play at least two games per year in the new stadium. It’s even been reported that the NFL is helping fund the new stadium, fueling rumors that the NFL could place a team permanently in London.
Tottenham has selected SCX to design and build the retractable grass pitch, which will sit in three steel trays, each weighing more than 3,000 tons. To reveal the synthetic field below, the natural surface will split into three sections and retract under the south stand. The process of switching from one surface to another is expected to take approximately 25 minutes.
