The Kings have been waiting a long time for this moment, more than a decade, to replace the aging Sleep Train Arena with a more up-to-date downtown facility with modern amenities. But now, a new arena is coming, and it appears to be one of the most unique in the NBA.
The projected $448 million arena will greet fans with a wave; a pattern of wavy panels blanket the exterior, as seen on the initial design renderings released this week. The new arena will also have a large atrium-style entrance and a 50-by-150-foot window offering views from outside into the seating bowl.
The drawings of the interior of the building show a huge center-hung scoreboard, similar to what was installed in Houston prior to this season. Several levels of suites are also included.
It’s been reported that the new Kings arena, designed by AECOM, will be the marriage of sports and technology. The Kings' new owner, Vivek Ranadive, comes from a technology background and has expressed his commitment to investing in technology. One report has stated the Kings will be the first sports franchise to accept Bitcoin as a form of payment.
