Overall Building Architecture

It’s more than just curb appeal. Every building tells a story. What’s yours? This category looks at architectural considerations like the intersection of form and function, materials used, and tasteful branding integration.

The University of Texas at Austin Moody Center Basketball and Events Arena

The University of Texas at Austin Moody Center Basketball and Events Arena, “Moody Center,” creates an immersive experience from the moment fans arrive at the interactive plaza until they get to their seats. The 15,000- seat facility replaces the 42-year-old Frank Erwin Center as the home for Texas Men’s and Women’s basketball and serves as a major entertainment venue for the Austin community. Designed to create stimulating urban spaces, the arena integrates sports facilities with current and future UT development.

GEODIS Park

Situated just south of bustling Nashville, GEODIS Park provides a new home for Nashville SC, reflective of its community, culture and heritage. The partnership of design firms Populous and HASTINGS joined to design GEODIS Park, the largest purpose-built soccer stadium in the United States and Canada as a testament to Nashville’s loyal, diverse fan base. Throughout the stadium, the growing support of soccer in the U.S. and Nashville is on display, as well as a true, authentic manifestation of all that sets Music City apart.

SoFi Stadium (Overall Building Architecture)

SoFi Stadium was designed to naturally integrate with the city and people of Los Angeles. It’s difficult to understand the size and scope of SoFi Stadium upon first approach to the building from the street level. SoFi Stadium was built 100 feet in the ground to accommodate the two major flight paths into LAX that sit below. The construction team excavated over 7 million cubic yards of dirt to create the stadium bowl. Nearly 100,000 tons of steel and cable were installed, and 144,000 cubic yards of concrete were used to construct SoFi Stadium.

University of Notre Dame

TQL Stadium

The story of TQL Stadium, FC Cincinnati’s new home and Major League Soccer’s latest soccer-specific stadium, begins with the site. Ownership intentionally chose a centrally located urban environment with connections to all corners of the city. West End and the nearby Over-The-Rhine (OTR) district are two of Cincinnati’s most historic neighborhoods, each with their own distinct flavor and energy.

Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse

In September 2019, the new Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse (RMFH) opened in Cleveland to glowing reviews. The state-of-the-art venue, home to the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters and hundreds of concerts and events, was 26 years in the making. Over a 20-month period, the FieldHouse, which originally opened in 1994, underwent a Transformation that, in essence, created a brand new facility. Almost every inch of the FieldHouse was touched during the Transformation and the result is a stunning new venue that instantly established an iconic, new presence in downtown Cleveland.

Lower.com Field

HNTB served as the Design Architect and Architect of Record for the new 20,000-seat, 460,000-SF Lower.com Field, home of the Columbus Crew MLS team. A multidisciplinary design team, including MKSK (Urban Planning/Landscape Architecture) and BLUR Workshop (Premium Interiors) collaborated with team Ownership (Haslam Sports Group / Edwards Family) to deliver a world-class stadium designed to host MLS, FIFA and the U.S. Soccer national team matches as well as concerts and numerous community events.

Q2 Stadium

A vision turned reality, Q2 Stadium brings to fruition years of close planning and partnership between Austin FC and the City of Austin. In search of creating a versatile and adaptable experience, the MLS Club scoured for the perfect location that would spur community and economic growth. Seven different city-owned sites were considered before settling on a brownfield site located near the North Burnet Gateway. Previously a chemical plant, the decision was made in an effort to leave public park space untouched.

Amalie Arena

The Tampa Bay Lightning, Vinik Sports Group, AMALIE Arena and Delaware North, the team’s official food and beverage provider, will be bringing a more fan-friendly concept to their concessions for the upcoming (2019/20) season, introducing new design kitchen concepts throughout the building.

Rogers Place

Rogers Place has made its mark in sports and entertainment for its design, operational excellence, and unsurpassed attention to detail. Construction on the over one-million-square-foot, five-concourse facility initiated in March of 2014, and the facility opened its doors in September of 2016. In addition to the arena, the project also includes an attached community arena, a 34,000-square-foot grand entrance and ‎events space named Ford Hall, and connective infrastructure to the light rail transit system, bringing the total project size to 1,116,000 square feet.

USTA Arthur Ashe Stadium

Every August for the US Open, Arthur Ashe Stadium hosts elite tennis athletes, crowds of fans, and sponsors for a two-week period. At 23,771 seats, Arthur Ashe Stadium is the primary tennis stadium on the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center campus, and is the largest tennis stadium in the world. Arthur Ashe Stadium was originally designed by ROSSETTI in 1997 but was not designed to have a roof. Rain hindered play during the US Open for five consecutive years, causing the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to search for a solution.

Grandstand Stadium

The original Grandstand Stadium at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center was located in the crowded northeast corner of campus. The stadium was loved by fans for its intimate atmosphere and access to the players; however, in an effort to create a more even distribution of fans throughout the campus, the master plan required the stadium to be moved to the opposite southwest corner of campus.
