SoFi Stadium (Overall Building Architecture)

SoFi Stadium was designed to naturally integrate with the city and people of Los Angeles. It’s difficult to understand the size and scope of SoFi Stadium upon first approach to the building from the street level. SoFi Stadium was built 100 feet in the ground to accommodate the two major flight paths into LAX that sit below. The construction team excavated over 7 million cubic yards of dirt to create the stadium bowl. Nearly 100,000 tons of steel and cable were installed, and 144,000 cubic yards of concrete were used to construct SoFi Stadium. At the peak of construction, SoFi Stadium had up to 3,500 construction workers on-site daily, with Inglewood residents being given priority placement. During construction, more than 17,000 workers contributed to the project and more than 18 million worker hours were completed. The size and scope of this project is unprecedented and unparalleled.

The state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium is home of the Los Angeles Chargers and Super Bowl LVI champion Los Angeles Rams and is located in Inglewood, Calif. SoFi Stadium is the centerpiece of Hollywood Park, a near 300-acre mixed-use development being built by Rams Owner/Chairman E. Stanley Kroenke. The open-air SoFi Stadium is the first indoor-outdoor stadium to be constructed and the largest stadium in the NFL at 3.1 million square feet. SoFi Stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 70,000, expandable up to 100,000. SoFi Stadium was built with the vision to be a sports and entertainment destination in the heart of the entertainment capital of the world. SoFi Stadium became the first football stadium built in Los Angeles in nearly a century.

It is one of the most modern and technologically advanced stadiums in the world. Its ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) roof canopy stretches across the stadium, YouTube Theater, and American Airlines Plaza, and is 1 million square feet from end to end. The ETFE creates a semi-clear cover that protects from weather elements. It has a 65 percent frit pattern, which blocks UV rays and helps guests from getting sunburned during the hot LA summers. It also acts as a natural cooler for the building, with the temperature in the seating bowl being approximately 4 degrees cooler than outside.

Additionally, SoFi Stadium was built with technology to take the fan experience to the next level. The Infinity Screen by Samsung is the first-of-its-kind, and the only dual sided, center-hung videoboard ever created, as well as the largest ever created in sports. 4K end-to-end, the Infinity Screen by Samsung weighs 2.2 million pounds and features 70,000 square feet of digital LED with nearly 80 million pixels.

SoFi Stadium was built for Los Angeles. With its indoor-outdoor elements, this stadium design could not successfully exist anywhere else in the country. Its unique and comprehensive design makes it a natural gathering space for Angelenos and guests from around the world to watch their favorite teams play, catch a concert or attend a community event. Located under the LAX flight path, the stadium was also designed from above – nicknamed the fifth elevation. This provides a unique opportunity to design not only for eyes on the ground, but also for those viewing the building from above. SoFi Stadium's roof LED display, which acts as a large TV screen and equates to about 6.5 city blocks, is often programmed with upcoming events and signage, and is visible to the millions of passengers flying into LAX each year.
